The "Pays Fort" is characterised by its rolling countryside, dotted with copses , its meadows still framed by rich dense hedges ( known locally as "bouchtures") , where villages and hamlets nestle in old-world charm. Numerous hollow lanes, evoking the stage-coaches of bygone days, and small country roads perfumed by nature, are ideal for all who like to hike, or just to gently stroll.
These walks reveal a rich patrimony of ancient wood-frame dwellings (the farm labourer's house La Gravière at Boucard, dating from the 16th century), old water mills (Moulin au Riche at Concressault, 16th century), wash-houses, as well as the famous pyramidal barns (17th-18th century) typical of the Pays Fort region and an absolute must for any visitor.
Also worth discovering are the churches, mostly Romanesque, with the exception of St Aignan at Jars, known as the little cathedral of the Pays Fort, built at the beginning of the Renaissance. And round the next corner you might well come across a proud old castle (Boucard in Le Noyer, La Croslaie in Villegeonon), homes of the families who have forged the history of the Province of Berry and the distant French countryside, as well impressive manor houses (such as Nancray at Jars) and residences of the village elders.
All our team is at your service to give you information about local and regional history, monuments to see, local events – traditional, cultural, sporting, festive - as well as the gastronomic specialties of our region.
